Hundreds of thousands of civilians could be cut off from food supplies if Syrian government forces encircle rebel-held parts of metropolis, the united nations same on Tuesday, warning of a massive new flight of refugees.
Syrian government forces, backed by Russian air strikes and Iranian and Lebanese Hizbollah fighters, have launched a significant offensive in the country around urban center, which has been divided between government and rebel control for years.
The assault to surround urban center, once Syria's biggest city with a pair of million people, amountsto 1 of the most important shifts of momentum in the 5 year civil war that has killed 250,000 peopleand already driven 11 million from their homes.
The united nations are worried the government could cut off the last link for civilians in rebel-held parts of urban center with the main Turkish border crossing, which has long served as the lifeline for insurgent-controlled territory.
